Staking: straight answers
What exactly is staking?
Staking marks on the ground the position of your lot's limits as they appear in the title and cadastre. The land surveyor sets markers at the accessible limit points and issues a signed and sealed certificate, so you can plan your work in the right place.
How much does land staking cost?
The price depends on the lot's area, the number of limits to locate, the state of the cadastre and site access. We provide a firm price in writing before starting.
Do I need staking before installing a fence?
Yes, it's strongly recommended. A fence built on a presumed line rather than the actual limit creates an encroachment that will need correcting, often at the time of sale. Staking gives you the exact position of the limits before the work begins.
Is staking binding on my neighbour?
Staking expresses the land surveyor's opinion based on the title and cadastre. It is a reliable reference for your work, but it does not legally settle a disagreement between neighbours. We will point you to the right process if the situation calls for it.
What is a staking certificate?
It's the document signed and sealed by the land surveyor that accompanies the staking. It describes the markers installed, the limits surveyed and the observations made on site. Municipalities often require it when applying for a permit.
Can a lot be staked in winter?
Yes, but snow and frozen ground can limit the placement and visibility of markers. We tell you in advance the limits of the operation given site conditions and, if needed, propose a spring return for final marking.
